I’m co-founder (with Dr. Nilda Cosco)/director of the Natural Learning Initiative (NLI), College of Design, NC State University. I have degrees in architecture (London) and city and regional planning (MIT). Since 2000, NLI has developed an environment & behavior, interdisciplinary approach to built environment action research and design for children and families in underserved communities. My expertise is intergenerational design of urban play and learning environments in the spaces of everyday life, beginning in “year zero.” I’m a founding principal of MIG, former chair of the Environmental Design Research Association, former president of the International Play Association, and a member of the UNESCO “Growing Up in Cities” research team. Recent publications include the book: Nature Play & Learning Places and “Design for Healthy Childhoods and a Healthy Planet,” in Biophilic Design.
