Building on the Summit is our Conference, April 20-21, featuring keynotes speakers, hands-on workshops and networking opportunities.

I've been wondering about bugs and birds for as long as I can remember. I read field guides for fun and as bedtime stories to my kids. Nature is my source for continual inspiration, connection and reflection, and my laboratory for observation, exploration, investigation and play. I've been a nature educator for more than 25 years, and am a co-founder of Wild Whatcom, a local nature education non-profit in Bellingham. As the Community Programs Coordinator, I primarily produce programs for families and women, but also happily serve as a mentor for the Girls Explorers Club and guide field trips fostering learning fun outdoors for our EdVentures program in Title 1 schools. I guide the Wild Things program, a nature exploration opportunity for families with children under the age of six. Wild Things has been meeting every week for seven years this May, in specific parks chosen for their seasonal qualities and exploration.

Please talk to me about working with families and how I foster connections between people and the place they live. Talk with me about how to foster engagement and have fun in a mixed age group program, as the challenge of teaching a specific concept to several age groups at the same time is my kind of fun. Let's talk about child development, sensory integration and how children learn. I'd love to discuss the importance of play and free discovery and why I rarely answer a child's questions. Let's talk about child-led programs, nurturing relationships versus natural history fact acquisition, and why igniting a child's imagination is so important. And let's have a conversation about safety and risk assessment, and explore the difference between perceived and actual risk.

Talk to me about women only nature exploring groups. I would love to share ideas about building connections to each other and to nature through solo time, reflection and specific natural history context.
